GLANZ® · Kitchen Material Guide
Material choices. Clearly explained.

Kitchen alternatives to wood.

Stainless steel, aluminium or PVC? Look beyond the shutter colour to understand what your cabinets are made of.

By GLANZ · Updated 22 October 2026 · Hero image: design concept, not a completed installation.

Alternatives to wooden kitchen cabinets include stainless steel, aluminium cabinet systems and suitable PVC boards. Each uses a different construction approach. Compare the cabinet body, shutters, hardware and finish separately—not just the material name in a quotation.

GLANZ manufactures custom Grade-304 stainless-steel kitchens. This is our buying guide, not an independent product test. The best choice depends on your room, budget, finish preferences and the specification of the complete cabinet.

Stainless steel vs aluminium vs PVC vs wood

These are material families, not uniform products. Thickness, reinforcement, joints, surface treatments and workmanship can change the result substantially. Ask for a written specification and inspect a physical sample.

What to check before choosing your cabinet system
Cabinet materialWhy consider it?Limitations and checks
Stainless steelA non-wood cabinet body; suitable for a contemporary residential kitchen with a coloured exterior.Confirm the grade, sheet thickness, reinforcement and finish. Steel can scratch or dent. Stainless steel is corrosion-resistant, not immune to corrosion; cleaning and exposure conditions matter.
Aluminium systemsAn alternative metal construction, available in different frame, panel and shutter arrangements.Ask what fills the panels and what the cabinet backs and shelves contain. Aluminium-framed shutters do not necessarily mean the whole cabinet is aluminium. Inspect joints, rigidity and hardware fixing.
PVC boardsA non-wood board option where the specific product is approved for cabinetry.Check board density, thickness, shelf loads, screw fixing and appliance heat clearances with the supplier. Do not assume every PVC sheet is furniture-grade or that a PVC finish means a PVC core.
Wood-based boardsA familiar route to many cabinet styles, with different board grades and finishes.Plywood, MDF and particleboard are not interchangeable. Check the exact board, moisture rating, edge sealing, termite provisions and warranty exclusions.

Core is not finish. An acrylic, laminate, PU-painted or wood-look front describes an appearance or surface system. Ask what is underneath it and whether the same core is used in the cabinet sides, back, shelves and shutters.

When does Grade-304 stainless steel make sense?

Consider it when you want a steel cabinet core instead of a wood-based carcass and are planning a custom kitchen around long-term use. GLANZ offers Grade-304 stainless-steel modular kitchens for residential layouts, including villas and farmhouses.

A metal core is not food for termites, but it does not make the surrounding building pest-proof. Keep leaks, wall dampness and neighbouring timber under review. A finished kitchen still depends on its worktop, plumbing, electrical installation, hardware and maintenance.

Be realistic about care

Stainless steel is not a promise of “zero maintenance” or “never rusts.” Chloride exposure and unsuitable cleaners can cause corrosion. Follow the supplied care instructions; avoid household bleach on stainless surfaces. Coastal or unusually aggressive conditions need a project-specific material review.

A steel kitchen does not have to look commercial.

The cabinet core and visible finish are separate decisions. GLANZ offers premium colour finishes and contemporary residential layouts; a stainless-steel core does not require an all-silver industrial appearance. Explore our kitchen design collection and compare physical finish samples before approval.

Discuss matte or textured finishes, glass accents and wood-look aesthetics with the design team. Confirm the exact finish system, available shades, cleaning requirements and repair options in your quotation. Design concepts show possibilities; they are not proof of a completed client installation.

How to compare price fairly

There is no reliable universal price ranking based only on “steel,” “aluminium” or “PVC.” Compare quotations for the same layout and scope. A low headline rate may exclude drawers, hardware, worktops, appliances, delivery or installation.

  1. Specify the core: material grade, thickness, reinforcement, backs, shelves and shutter construction.
  2. Match the hardware: hinge and drawer brands, load ratings, organisers and quantities.
  3. Confirm the surface: sample code, finish type, edge details and cleaning instructions.
  4. Itemise the total: cabinetry, worktop, appliances, plumbing/electrical work, transport, installation and taxes.
  5. Read the service terms: written warranty, exclusions, damage repairs and support at your project location.

Bring your floor plan, appliance list, project city and preferred finish to a consultation. Ask to see construction details and genuine project evidence relevant to your requirements—not only visualisations.

Questions homeowners ask

What can I use instead of wood for kitchen cabinets?

Stainless steel, aluminium cabinet systems and suitable PVC boards are options. Compare the complete construction, not just the shutter face, and check the supplier's specifications for your intended use.

Which kitchen material is best for termite concerns?

A stainless-steel or aluminium core removes wood from that part of the cabinet. It does not prevent termites elsewhere in the home. Check all cabinet components and address existing infestation separately.

Can stainless-steel kitchen cabinets come in colours?

Yes. GLANZ offers coloured exterior finishes over steel cabinet construction. Choose from the current physical samples and confirm the finish system in writing.

Is a Grade-304 steel kitchen completely rust-proof?

No material choice justifies that absolute promise. Grade-304 stainless steel is corrosion-resistant, but chlorides, harsh chemicals and unsuitable maintenance can affect it. Choose a specification appropriate to the site and follow care instructions.

Does GLANZ install kitchens outside Delhi-NCR?
